Common questions

Why does rhyming matter for reading?

Rhyming is the clearest sign a child can hear the separate parts inside a word. Children who rhyme easily at four almost always find phonics easier at five — it is one of the strongest early predictors of reading success.

At what age should a child be able to rhyme?

Most children recognize rhymes by age four and can produce their own rhyming word by age five. If a child of five still can't hear rhymes, extra practice is worth doing before pushing phonics hard.

How do you teach rhyming?

Out loud, not on paper. Say pairs and ask 'do these rhyme?' before ever asking a child to produce one. Nursery rhymes and silly nonsense rhymes work better than worksheets at this stage.
