What are sight words?
Sight words are the highest-frequency words in English — words like the, said, was and come. Some can't be sounded out easily, and all of them appear so often that reading them instantly makes everything else easier.
How many sight words should a kindergartner know?
Most kindergarten programs target the 40 Dolch pre-primer words by mid-year and the 52 primer words by the end of the year. First grade adds roughly another 41.
What is the difference between Dolch and Fry sight words?
Dolch lists are grouped by grade band and were built from children's books. Fry lists are ranked by frequency across all printed English. They overlap heavily — learn either and you cover most early text.
What is the best way to teach sight words?
Short, frequent bursts. Show the word, say it, use it in a sentence, then have your child write it. Three minutes a day beats a twenty-minute drill once a week.
